So you want to shoot with models? Part I - The Do’s
Okay, so a lot of what I’m about to say is common sense and basic human decency however you’d be surprised how often I hear of photographers who don’t act professionally.
Unfortunately model photography attracts some less than savoury characters, we’re talking people that think owning a camera gives them cart blanche to behave inappropriately. Models talk to each other and once you have a bad rep, even if its not justified, it’s extremely hard to come back from.
So here’s a few pointers to keep you right.
Do’s
Communicate - the more that you communicate with you model before the shoot the easier it will go. Just make sure to respect their time and don’t spam them with hundreds of messages. Also be aware that the majority of models have other jobs so may take longer to get back to you or have to reply at strange times due to shifts.
Plan your shoots - You should know what you want to shoot, where you want to shoot and if its a paid or time for print shoot from the start. Compline and share mood boards showing styles and even poses (Pinterest is ideal for this). Managing expectations is a big part of a smooth shoot as there will be enough to sort on the day.
Talk - sticking with comms, when you get to the shoot speak to your model/models. I’m not talking directions as a bare minimum have a 5 minute converstion and get to know them a little bit - the more relaxed your model is the better your shots will be.
Be respectful - models have their own lives and experiences which may be totally different to your own. If you can’t treat another person with common courtesy then go shoot landscapes or wildlife.
Encourage & guide - as you shoot if your model is nailing it then tell them, if they aren’t quite there give them some guidance as to what you’re aiming for. Show back of camera shots, pull the pose yourself or show examples of what you mean. Smart phones mean most of us have the internet in our pockets use it for the phenomenal resource that it is.
Thank your model - I can’t believe I have to say this but I have heard of photographers just up and leaving without thanking models, especially on group shoots.
Give feedback - Positive references or constructive feedback are not only good for your rep but help the model grow - just make sure its constructive (read part II)
As I said basic decency and common sense.
Cheers
